Recovering from any surgery can be difficult and painful. However, if you are prepared, it can go smoothly. Like any surgery, it’s important to take care of yourself afterward. And we know how! At Cavalancia Orthodontics, we strive to help and educate patients on what to do before, during, and after orthodontic treatment. If you’re about to go into jaw surgery, we have the tips you need so you can have a successful recovery.

Recovery Tips

  1. Plan Ahead- Recovering from jaw surgery requires you to rest afterward. Let your workplace or school know that you’ll be skipping for the first two weeks. You should also plan to get groceries and other necessities ahead of time. Also, plan to have a family member or friend pick you up from the surgery so they can drive you home.
  2. Sleep Well- For your jaw to heal properly, it’s best to prioritize sleep. Make sure to set up a comfortable bedding environment before the surgery. If you suffer from insomnia, melatonin and other gentle sleep aids can help.
  3. Soft-Food Diet- Avoid any foods that require vigorous chewing. Straining your jaw by chewing could cause damage, open stitches, and cause complications. Stick to smoothies, yogurt, soup, eggs, soft bread, steamed veggies, and other soft foods for a little while. The key is to avoid moving the jaw and give it rest to heal. Also, instead of eating large meals, try eating in smaller portions throughout the day and drinking plenty of water.
  4. Manage Pain- After surgery, you will probably need to take medications for the pain. Your doctor may prescribe a painkiller, as well as recommend over-the-counter drugs for extra support. Make sure to follow the directions your doctor/pharmacist recommends.
  5. Upkeep Hygiene: Keeping up with oral hygiene will be important post-surgery to avoid infections. This means you’ll have to brush and rinse each day. But since you can’t apply pressure to the jaws and teeth, you’ll need to be gentle. Start small with subtle brush movements. Avoid any mechanical toothbrushes as the intense vibrations to your jaw will cause pain. You can also rinse with alcohol-free mouthwash or warm salt water.
  6. Avoid Strenuous Activities: Surgery is traumatic to the body and will require rest for recovery. Take it easy the first week. You should be able to resume most of your daily activities after the first week, however, avoid any intense physical activities. Our advice is to stay away from any sports or strenuous activities that can increase the risk of injury.
